◎ Personality:

At first sight, you would probably consider Gundam's ultimate talent to be something more along the lines of Super Villain or Evil Genius. Really, even listening to him speak could easily convince you of this. The dark, eccentric and almost overbearing personality of his is immediately apparent in the over dramatic and almost theatrical way he talks. He might demand that you reveal your "true self" to him, or threaten to end your life should you take one wrong misstep in any direction. He will probably ask where your allegiances lie without even explaining what or who you're supposed to be allying yourself with. From the deep, villainous cackle he has to the way his dresses to his title of Supreme Overlord of Ice, everything about him goes directly against what one might expect of someone who works so close with and breeds animals. And that's exactly what he wants.

Gundam Tanaka is the Super High School Level Animal Breeder and in spite of all the preconceived notions one might have for an ultimate Animal Breeder, he will surprise you at every turn. He'll speak of devils and spirits, of battles and time spent in the Netherworld. He'll warn you of powers beyond your control and then pity you for being nothing but a mere mortal, caught in some great war between magical forces beyond your comprehension. Even the way he refers to animals, his specialty, is often heavy with myth and magic and legend, claiming to have tamed the Cerberus, the Phoenix and the Midgar Serpent when the topic comes up for instance. He seems almost like he lives in an entirely different world than the one he's physically inhabiting, talking as if this is actually the truth or as if the "mortals" around him simply cannot see or comprehend what's really there.

In his world, he's a creature of darkness, born from an angel and a demon. He possesses great power, utilizing extensive knowledge of things such as magic, demonology, alchemy and subjects in those veins to prove himself. Gundam is the Supreme Overlord of Ice, kept company by his familiars the Four Dark Devas of Destruction; his four hamsters. There is the "Supernova Silver Fox" San-D, the "Crimson Steel Elephant" Maga-Z, the "Mirage Golden Hawk" Jum-P and the "Invading Black Dragon" Cham-P. Despite their names and, admittedly, impressive skills and understanding of the humans they're living with, they of course are just hamsters. In Gundam's world, however, they are clearly so much more.

Really, the Animal Breeder is extremely imaginative and creative in this way. He always seems to have something else to tell about this plane of existence or a story of his battles, of the Netherworld, of the various multiverses to share. Whatever you give him, he can almost always put his own eccentric spin on it, giving it some new and more meaningful reason or definition. This imagination even stems to creating exciting back stories for his friends, giving Sonia Nevermind a new "dark queen" persona or talking of how Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu "gazed into Pandemonium" after his near fatal involvement in the second execution and awoke with new power, but would be destined for endless battles because of it.

Despite how wild his stories, claims and beliefs may be sometimes, Gundam is surprisingly well grounded to the real world. Especially when it comes to animals - willing to accept rather than deny that his hamsters have a very short life span, speaking firmly about proper care and treatment - but he also possesses good views on life too. From his very first Free Time Event (FTE), he often surprises Hajime with his values. "Is there anything in this world that isn't difficult? Pleasure and pain are irrelevant as long as you have a purpose, and take action for that sake." And the Animal Breeder has impressively strong faith in these convictions, going so far as to sacrifice himself so that the others may live in the fourth chapter, offering them a lecture on how it's important to cling to life, no matter what. To just do nothing and let it waste away because that seems like the better action is unacceptable in his eyes. Life is too important.

There is a strong chance that his over the top personality may exist to hide or even protect a more gentler nature underneath. His sacrifice, while clearly motivated by his beliefs, was also a show of compassion for people whom he'd grown close to, despite referring to them all as "mere mortals" or "humans", treating them almost as if they were insects compared to himself. He's the type to cry at animal movies, warning Hajime to bring an entire box of tissues when the suggestion is brought up (in the kinder and more supplemental Island Mode). He admits in his FTEs that the "poison" he claims to have running through his body is due to his mother's awful cooking and his inability to refuse to eat it, otherwise she would start crying. One of the most important values to a pet is how cute it looks, stating that Monokuma and Monomi can't be considered tameable beasts because they talk but, "more importantly" they aren't cute. And he heavily appreciates it when Sonia calls his hamsters adorable. He even refuses to associate with livestock because he knows they really only exist to be eaten, and it's obvious this upsets him. He states that, if he had the All-Seeing Eye, he could and would change this fate of theirs.

That is one thing that shows just how deep of a connection with and genuine love for animals he has. Beyond caring for and breeding them, animals mean so much to Gundam. It isn't surprising to hear him speak highly of their kindness, intelligence and personalities. Even the smallest of creatures can be the mightiest and scariest (referring to his hamsters as evil gods, or speaking of a Pomeranian he calls the "Hell Hound"). His taming methods including showing the animals you mean them absolutely no ill will, and speaking kindly to them as to earn their trust, rather than boasting about unholy rituals or some other more magical or "evil" method. How you treat animals is important, and he's always willing to impart this knowledge on others. "Make sure you provide plenty of exercise, high quality food, and a place to sleep. Such luxuries mean everything to creatures who only live 1,095 days after they're born." And it's clear he understands animals far better than humans, and it likely works the other way around too.

This problem stems a lot from how distrusting Gundam tends to be. Because he has such a hard time trusting and interacting with other people, he has very poor communication skills. Often times it's hard to understand his dramatic speeches or contradictory statements ("Introduce yourself, for once you do I will destroy you" etc). Everything he does seems to be made to ward people away. He treats them as if they are an entirely different being than himself, comparing them as humans to his demon, claiming they cannot even get too close to him or they will die because of the "poison" running through him, and tends to be very quiet and withdrawn from others. He constantly speaks about how he is different from humans, claiming everything about him is different. It wouldn't be surprising if this is due to poor treatment he may have received from others when he was younger, especially considering his claim that "anything that can talk will inevitably betray you."

All of this though can't hide that he very likely yearns for human contact and is very lonely underneath it all. There are a few times where the way he speaks leaves this sense of loneliness in the protagonist, and he wonders if there's something he can do to help. Gundam will spend time skirting the outside of groups and gatherings, watching and seeming to want to participate but never inviting himself. When he's asked, he'll say something to the affect of "being alone never bothered me anyway" and walk off, but Hajime is sure he actually just wanted to be included. It's obviously difficult for him to actually make friends, but when he does finally manage, however, it's clear how important and valued that person is to him. He will create some sort of magical reason for why they can interact with him so closely (Hajime being a mere human, but containing a "singularity" for instance) and it's likely he will make some pact with them as well. He even goes so far as to tell the protag that he cannot die without his permission.
